3D Redshift Space Visualization of 35699 Galaxies from the ADS CfA Catalogue

Abstract:

This paper is the documentation for our video "3D Redshift Space Visualization of 35699 Galaxies from the ADS CfA Catalogue" made as the examination task for the course "3D Dynamics & Visualization" given by Åke Nordlund and Klaus Galsgaard in the spring term of 1994.

Our intension was to use the tools presented to us during the course (mainly SGI Explorer and IDL) to make a three-dimensional animation of a large data-set. We chose the CfA Redshift Catalogue retrieved from NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) in order to examine the evidence for large scale structure as indicated by (amongst others) Geller and Huchra (1989) in a way never presented before.

Please note that we have included printouts of the IDL procerdures used as well as snapshots of the Explorer-maps involved in the animation process. Since this is not requested for this report it is mainly for our own sake to make it easier to reproduce similar data at a later time.
