Convection Animations

Passive Tracer Particle Movies

These show projections of particles that were released at the solar surface (z=0) at t=0. The physical size of the model is 6x6x3 Mm. The animations are from two different experiments, one covering 9 minutes, at a numerical resolution of 253x253x163, and one covering 16 minutes, at a numerical resolution of 125x125x82.

The animations from the two resolutions are not directly comparable, since the flowpatterns are different.

The sizes of the MPEG files are between 0.3 and 0.6 Mb.

xz-plane, forwards in time;

Notice that it does not make much difference for the final distribution which set of particles one starts out from; the ones that are initially going up rapidly turn over, and are sucked into the downdrafts not long after the ones that are initially already going down.
