Public images - images obtained from anonymous ftp account at stsci.edu

   Gif images supports up to 256 colors (8-bit).  Tiff images support 
   full color (24-bit).  All image data are binary, so when transferring 
   using ftp, make sure to set the transfer mode to "binary".

To display locally, use xv (the right mouse button gives you the control 
panel).  E.g.
   xv saturn.tiff
   xv mars.gif

To convert image mars.gif from GIF to FITS, do: 
   giftoppm < mars.gif | ppmtopgm | pgmtofits > mars.fits

To convert image saturn.tiff from TIFF to FITS, do:
  tifftopgm < saturn.tiff | pgmtofits > saturn.fits
  (panic! - this patently reads the image wrongly).
